Teledyne FLIR Defense, part of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:TDY), announced on February 8th that the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center has awarded the company an indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract worth up to $43.9 million to service electro-optical sensor systems used for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR). The contract will provide replacement parts and technical support for several land- and sea-based systems used by the United States Navy and Coast Guard, including the BRITE® Star II, the Sea Star SAFIRE® III, and the Star SAFIRE® 380-HD. In addition to the IDIQ award, the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) also recently awarded Teledyne FLIR two contracts with a combined value of $16.2 million to procure BRITE Star II multi-sensory imaging systems. Those systems will support the U.S. Navy/Marine Corps H-1 program.

Dosimeters are intended for use as part of an automated system of individual dosimetric control and for autonomous use. Electronic personal dosimeters EPD-27 are available in two modifications – DoseG and DoseGX. Dosimeters are used in nuclear power plants, medicine, industry, radiological laboratories, and in institutions where they use sources of photon ionizing radiation.

New instrument helps maximize lab productivity and extends FTIR to large, heavy samples. Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today announced the Thermo Scientific Nicolet RaptIR FTIR Microscope. It enables users of varying experience levels to quickly locate areas of interest, collect high-spatial resolution visual and infrared data, and generate accurate results with minimal time and effort. This next-generation Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy microscope is designed to let researchers rapidly locate and identify trace materials, inclusions, impurities and microparticles along with the distribution of these materials within a sample. The microscope includes a large working area and heavy-duty stage, allowing for investigation of a wide range of samples up to 4 centimeters thick and 5 kilograms in weight. Enhanced automation makes it possible to identify thousands of particles on a 1cm2 filter quickly and efficiently.

Sedgefield-based Kromek Group plc has published a white paper setting out the urgent need for the UK Government to invest in technology to prevent a future pandemic. Future biological threats and mitigation, authored by Kromek CEO, Dr Arnab Basu MBE and chemical and biological weapons expert, Colonel Hamish de Bretton-Gordon OBE, with a foreword by former Secretary of State for Defence, Sir Michael Fallon. The white paper calls on decisionmakers to treat the Covid-19 pandemic as a wake-up call, rather than a one-off event. It suggests that emerging bio-skills among rogue states and terror groups could lead to modified viruses becoming a feature of future warfare, notwithstanding the continued risk of existing animal pathogens mutating to enable human-to-human transmission.
