SERB Specialty Pharmaceuticals Company Profile
Could you shortly introduce SERB Laboratories and describe its main activities?
SERB is a pharmaceutical group providing essential drugs thanks to our direct presence in the Benelux countries, France, the US, the UK, Germany, Poland, the Nordic countries, the Middle East, Australia, Italy, and over 100 countries, including Canada and Japan, through a broad network of experienced distributors.
With one of the most wide-ranging emergency care portfolios, SERB has strong expertise in CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear) threats. We provide life-saving medicines for cyanide poisoning, neurotoxins, multiple metal poisonings, anthrax, and acute nuclear exposure. Our expertise is well recognized by key authorities and granted during large-scale events (FIFA World Cup, Olympic Games, etc.) for safety stockpiling to protect the population.
How important is international cooperation for SERB Laboratories?
With our extensive life-saving medicine portfolio, we are a long-standing partner for health authorities, governmental and non-governmental agencies, therapeutic experts, and patient associations – committed to serving each patient's needs.
The risk posed by CBRN is a permanent and unpredictable threat. We are seeking to maximize CBRN awareness to protect everyone, everywhere. SERB is working alongside governmental agencies in the US, Europe, Middle East, Latin America, and North Africa to meet the requirements and be accessible to the largest possible population. Thanks to our effective network with authorities, we can respond to specific needs through special access programs.
Besides governmental organizations, SERB has set up partnerships with noted international NGOs (non-governmental organizations) to make essential medicines available in regions where populations are at especial risk of exposure.
What are the biggest challenges and or threats in the CBRN defense sector, and what challenges/threats lie(s) ahead for SERB Laboratories?
Whether it is a terrorist threat or an industrial accident, chemical and nuclear risks that we are facing today are real and likely to occur. Chemical agents are increasingly being used as chemical weapons because they are easily accessible and can be used on a large scale.
There is a growing need to better understand the agents being used, the targets, and routes of exposure to direct funding for appropriate stockpiling and enable the most optimal treatment. All populations worldwide are concerned; therefore it is key to best prepare to protect from future threats.
In recent incidents attributed to chemical weapons such as Novichok agents, one of the essential countermeasures is for organophosphates and neurotoxins. SERB provides medical solutions with oximes (Obidoxime and Pralidoxime). Administration of such life-saving antidotes is of the utmost urgency. Research and development projects examining these agents are ongoing to face this increasing threat better.
We always seek to answer unmet needs by continually improving our drugs and adapting their indications and dosages. For example, we have developed and registered a dedicated dosage for one of our antidotes for adequate treatment of the children exposure.
SERB is also involved in protection against nuclear contamination with the commercialization of potassium iodide. This is an essential product to offset accidental radiation exposure and prevent thyroid cancer. It is a crucial medical countermeasure for governments and health authorities to protect their population.
SERB Laboratories exhibited at NCT Virtual Europe 2021. How did you experience the event? Do you think this type of event is important within the CBRNe community?
NCT events are an open window to the CBRN World – it is an excellent opportunity to meet - even virtually - essential stakeholders. Quality guest speakers lead conferences, and it remains essential for us to be updated on the latest news and developments within the field.
During NCT Virtual Europe 2021, we were especially glad to be there and meet critical contacts as Defense, Civil protection, Fireman, Military, etc. SERB, by its pharmaceutical positioning and its complete antidote portfolio, piques interest. Constant engagement and discussions are vital as it helps us understand what the community is seeking and expecting.
Among our CBRN medical countermeasures, we wanted mainly to raise awareness on one of our leading products: Hydroxocobalamin 5g, a life-saving drug for treating known or suspected cyanide poisoning. As a chemical warfare agent (CWA), cyanide has caused several tragedies in history in various forms (liquid, gas). It can be used as a weapon, and because it’s easily spread, it remains as one of the most dangerous threats in a mass-casualty incident. Cyanide is also routinely used in industrial processes with potential human exposure, and therefore precautions and awareness are essential.
To conclude, no doubt that this kind of event is key to share best-practice and be well prepared to face CRBN threats. A shared vision drives all our collaborators: together, we are committed to providing medical countermeasures. We are #proudtosavelives
